According to Lonely Planet “Svalbard is the Arctic North as you always dreamed it existed. This wondrous archipelago is a land of dramatic snow-drowned peaks and glaciers, of vast ice fields and forbidding icebergs, an elemental place where the seemingly endless Arctic night and the perpetual sunlight of summer carry a deeper kind of magic. One of Europe’s last great wildernesses, this is also the domain of more polar bears than people, a terrain rich in epic legends of polar exploration”.

08:30 Departure Time
Join us for an exciting and speedy open-boat fjord safari to the Russian ghost town Pyramiden, as well as the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier. Pyramiden was once one of the largest settlements in Svalbard, with about 1,000 inhabitants. It was a good place to live, with a school, kindergarten, hotel, restaurant, and various other facilities.
In the late 90’s, the town was abandoned, and it now stands as more of a testament to its past, lying at the head of Billefjorden. All the buildings and many technical installations still remain. Inside the houses, everything is exactly as it was when it was abandoned, making it easy to imagine the place when it was teeming with life.
At Pyramiden, you will get a guided tour of the town and an expedition lunch outside before heading back to Longyearbyen. The return journey includes a drive up to the majestic Nordenskiöld glacier, among the most spectacular glaciers in Svalbard. Look out for Svalbard’s popular animal inhabitants that are unique to the Arctic environment!

Explore Advent Valley by ATV. You will be provided with Can-Am Outlander ATVs, driving them from Longyearbyen past remote cabins and out of the city. For every stop along the way, your guide will share their historical knowledge of Svalbard’s nature, coal mines, and culture. Look out for native wildlife, as the fauna in this area is in rich abundance!
The tour continues up Breinosa, a mountain with an active coal mine named Gruve 7. This high viewpoint is a perfect break to take in the scenic Advent Valley and Isfjorden from above. In the summer months, this is also a great place to bathe in the midnight sun of the polar regions.
If there is time on the way back, a short break can be made to visit one of the husky yards. Here, you will be introduced to sled dogs like Asterix, Darth Vader, and Spotify – each litter is named after films, books, technology, and more! Hot drinks and snacks will also be served.
